Chosen among women: Holy Mary and Lady Fatima

The Lord Mayor of Manchester with the Christian and Muslim speakers

On Sunday evening we were pleased to host an interfaith event with the Mohebban Al-Mahdi Youth Foundation.

The evening’s programme was based upon two “Ladies of Light”, the Blessed Virgin Mary and Lady Fatima, daughter of the Prophet of Islam Muhammad. The speakers from each faith gave insightful thoughts on the subject with consideration given to the prominence of the role of these women as role models in each faith respectively. A question and answer session closed the evening with searching questions on the role of women politically and socially, what we as Christians and Muslims can learn from Lady Fatima, Holy Mary and each other in our contemporary period.

The youth of Mohebban Al-Mahdi use these occasions to help to build a harmonious society and establish cordial relationships in our communities. We were pleased to welcome and support them in this their 3rd annual event. The Lord Mayor of Manchester attended the gathering and spoke of his wholehearted support of the event and such gatherings for people across communities to discuss and learn from each other.

It was good to see such a wide variety of people represented, including an 18 month old baby named Fatimah and her mother Maryam – particularly appropriate for the evening’s celebration of these two important women.
