Did you know that a popular children’s author once lived just a few yards from St Chrysostom’s Church?
Elfrida Vipont, author of the classic book for reading to the very young The Elephant and the Bad Baby (1969), and the Carnegie Medal winning The Lark on the Wing (1950) lived on Anson Road, in a house no longer standing, just next to church. In fact she went to school in the area, to Aucklands which was on the corner of Lower Park Road and Dennison Road. After she was married in 1926 she and her husband, Percy, moved to 10 Anson Road.
Elfrida (who lived from 1902 to 1992) wrote over forty books, was a headmistress, a leading Quaker and an inspiring lecturer. Here is a link to the Wikipedia entry about her.
Today children of St John’s school paid tribute to Elfrida as they re-enacted her story The Elephant and the Bad Baby, and placed it in a Longsight setting.
The whole school watched, with school staff and many parents – a lovely tribute to a great lady.
