A Courageous Calling

The second day of Christmastide

Into your hand I commit my spirit;
you have redeemed me, O Lord, faithful God
.  Psalm 31.5

Day 2Today, the ‘Feast of Stephen,’ we remember the first martyr of the Christian faith. Following Jesus,  – being a Christian, is a wonderful calling.

It is also a courageous calling. It is a calling which involves sacrifice.

At the heart of Christmas is giving. God gives to us, like Stephen we are called to give.

A lovely moment in our Carol service this year was the singing of the popular Christmas Carol, In the Bleak Midwinter. Christina Rossetti’s lovely Carol closes with these words:

What can I give him,
poor as I am?
If I were a shepherd,
I would bring a lamb;
if I were a wise man,
I would do my part;
yet what I can I give him
give my heart.
