How was the weather on Candlemas Day?

WeatherWhat was the weather like on Candlemas Day?

Candlemas (February 2nd) was considered one of the great days for forecasting the weather. How the weather was on the day helped forecast for the next forty days or so.

Unfortunately (at least for this year) how the weather is on the day itself is the opposite of how it is to be. And so popular belief claims that bad weather and cloudy skies on February 2nd mean an early and good summer. If the sun shines well on Candlemas Day then we can expect cold and snow to come.

If Candlemas day be fair and bright, Winter will have another fight.
If Candlemas day brings cloud and rain, Winter won’t come again.
(Old English Rhyme)

Hmm… Unfortunately many people at Mass on Sunday commented on how nice it was to see the sun at last! So don’t put away hats, gloves and scarves yet…
