Third Station – Jesus Falls under the Heavy Cross

Jesus Falls under the Heavy CrossWe adore you O Christ and we bless you
Because by your Holy Cross you have redeemed the world

The next day he saw Jesus coming towards him and declared, ‘Here is the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!’ John1:29

Thinking of Jesus as perfect, as God we can sometimes think that he would have carried his cross without faltering. He would have carried it boldly and with courage, resolutely stepping out.

But he did not. He fell beneath its weight. He shows us that God understands when we fall.

Is it pride that makes us want to shine even in pain? Christ was not ashamed to fall. He was not ashamed to show us that the cross was heavy.

There are those in the world whom our pride will not tolerate as we expect everyone to be strong. However, we are weak. We are ashamed to admit failure in anything.

Take a few moment of silence to reflect on your pride and intolerance and your weakness.

Revd Ray Clifford, retired priest living in London.

Now move to the Fourth Station.
