Maundy Thursday Haikus

Vigil Maundy 29-03-2013 00-04-51.51

The Vigil ends

Stay here, keep watch and pray…

Our Maundy Thursday vigil is a special and holy time and it is noteworthy that each year several people come to the vigil who have not attended the Mass which begins it, perhaps calling by to pray after an earlier evening engagement. This year was no exception with several people coming to pray who had not been at the Mass.

One year we invited any who wished to compose a haiku at the vigil. Here is a selection:

Candles, flowers, warmth
Watching, waiting and praying
Gethsemane HERE

Jesus, enduring,
Know that your Word breaks open
the cave of my heart

Candle flames flicker
As I kneel here with the Lord
…watching and praying …

The altar is barren
Stripped of its former glory
Silent, like the grave

In Gethsemane,
the place we bring our questions,
my clamouring heart.

Huic ecclesiam
Ubi caritas et amor
Deus ibi est       (guess who wrote this one!)

(Translated:
In this Church
Where love and loving kindness are
God is there)
